VISITING ARTIST: George Scheer Co-Founder and Collaborative Director of Elsewhere

Visiting Artist

Monday, November 12
6:30-8:00 pm
Lee Hall, Room 100, Art Department
Clemson University

George Scheer is co-founder and Executive Director of Elsewhere, a living museum and artist residency set inside a former thrift store in downtown Greensboro. Since 2003, Elsewhere has been transforming the three story former-store and its massive 58-year inventory of material and cultural surplus amassed by George's grandmother, Sylvia Gray. Elsewhere offers a unique site for artists from around the world to create site-specific works with and within a set of material resources that engage local publics. Elsewhere's museum is open Wednesday-Saturday from 1-10pm, it hosts weekly events, programs, and artist talks that welcome new forms of creative engagement between Greensboro publics and global contemporary artists.

As a writer and artist, George creates at the intersections of art and social change, performance and the conditions of possibility. He runs a button currency system in a play city, was part of a team building an upside-down row boat on a frozen lake in Minneapolis and one of the curators of Kulturpark, a 5 year public research project in an abandoned amusement park in East Berlin. George is currently pursuing a PhD in Communication and Performance Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, and holds an MA in Critical Theory and Visual Culture from Duke University and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in Political Communications. His current research explores the emerging political economy for art in economic and civic development.
