Seeking submissions for short-form site-specific performance pieces for "Borderline Bushwick"

This will take the form of a series of public site- specific performances around Bushwick as part of Bushwick Open Studios.

June 3rd at 4 - 7 PM

Pieces should respond to the borders that divide our world, our country, our communities and ourselves. Artists are encouraged to engage with the local Bushwick community to identify stories and sentiments surrounding the topic to inform their work. We are looking for performances that imaginatively engage with these questions in provocative and visually stunning ways.

Performances will be set in different site-specific public locations mutually agreed upon by artist and presenter around the area of the Jefferson Street L Train stop. The audience will meet at a designated
starting location and will go on a tour of performances around Bushwick, ending in a party.

GUIDING QUESTIONS: What does it mean to "Cross a border"  whether a literal country
border or a border that divides a community or culture?
  • How and why are borders and divisions created?
  • How can they be crossed or dissolved?
  • What types of borders inspire you or constrain you as an artist, and do you think affect the Bushwick community?

REQUIREMENTS:
These should be NO TECH (sound, light, or power) Any technical elements must be controlled by your performers- such as a boom box or light that they carry.

Artists will be asked to attend 1-2 workshop sessions prior to the event to receive feedback on the work.

  • Pieces should be between 5-10 minutes max
  • Pieces should have easy set up and breakdown
Artist Response Forums are an ongoing series of presentations of new and innovative artists addressing topical social and political matters. Short-form pieces are developed over an expedited development process with Hybrid Theatre Works and mounted in site-specific locations.

Arts In Bushwick (AIB) hosts the 6th annual Bushwick Open Studios tour, its largest event, incorporating all types of creative expression and other community activities over three days.  Past BOS included more than 250 artist studios, group shows and events in over 125 buildings across more than four square miles of Bushwick, including bordering areas of East Williamsburg, Bedford-Stuyvesant and Ridgewood, Queens.  Overall, more than 500 artists participate in the event, and thousands of visitors attend.
