Art
in the Park : New Forms from the Southeast, Mercer University, Department of Art, Tattnall Square Park, Knight Foundation
INTRODUCTION
Mercer University’s Art Department, in collaboration with
Tattnall Square Park and the Macon/Bibb Parks and Recreation Department, seeks
seven artists or artist teams to show temporary, public art projects in
Tattnall Square Park, located at 148 College St. Macon, Georgia.
The selected
artists will display temporary installations or sculpture in the park from
October 31, 2014 – February 27, 2015. The call is open to artists who reside in
the Southeast United States. The application deadline is 11 p.m., Friday,
October 3.
Opening Reception November 14.
BACKGROUND
Tattnall Square Park is a 16 acre public park in downtown
Macon, Georgia. It is one of Macon’s most historic green spaces and one of the
oldest city parks in America. Please see the attached Park Information pdf file
to learn more about the park’s history and current day use.
EXHIBITION THEME
New Forms from the Southeast seeks to show contemporary art
from new and emerging artists who are working in the Southeast region of The United States and who create work that is built for outdoors
and public interaction. New Forms from the Southeast is part of a larger temporary
public art program called Art in the Park, which will bring six exhibitions of
temporary public art to Macon’s Tattnall Square over a two-year period. The
project is funded by a grant from The Knight Foundation and receives partial
support from Mercer University.
The artwork should:
• activate the space and engage pedestrians at the site.
• address the space as a whole and encourage pedestrian flow
through the site.
The artwork can (but
is not limited to):
• operate or interact with Parks planned activities at the
site.
• be two- or three-dimensional, allowing for movement
through the space.
• offer participatory or interactive experiences for
visitors to the site.
• allow for a short- or long-term experience.
• work with projection, light or sound.
• include performance components.
STIPEND
Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend to help pay
for travel expenses, and project costs for delivery, installation, and removal
of artwork. Sevenartists or artist teams will be chosen. Permit fees, and
insurance will be paid for by Mercer University. Artists will receive help with
installation of their work from the Mercer Art Department faculty and some
students.
ELIGIBILITY
The call is open to artists who are living in Georgia,
Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia.
Artists may apply as a team, but the application should
clearly describe the contribution of each collaborator. Artists do not need to
have a background in public art, but should be aware of the challenges of
creating work for an urban and unprotected site like Tattnall Square Park.
The Art in the Park program encourages diversity in each of
its exhibitions. Artists whose work is well represented in the region are
eligible to apply, but the artist selection panel will consider artistic
diversity as one factor in the selection process. Students are not eligible to
apply.
