Works by CU Art Department faculty members are featured in an exhibition in Sanborn, NY.
The Dolce Valvo Art Center at Niagara County Community College will present an exhibition that will feature drawings from Kathleen Thum's "Tube Drawing" Series and large wooden block arrangements with drawings and collages by Evangelos Courpas from his "Building Block" series. The show will run from March 1 through April 5, 2012 at the Dolce Valvo Art Center on the Niagara County Community College campus, 3111 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn NY 14132.
An opening reception will take place Thursday March 1, from 12 – 2 pm and an Artists Talk will take place on the same day, immediately following reception in the Art Center.
Kathleen's drawings and paintings are based on various human physiological systems, depicted through rendering abstract networks of forms, lines, and color. She is inspired by medical illustrations and diagrams, industrial factories and landscapes, and building systems. Kathleen's work has been included in numerous group exhibitions such as "Made in NY" at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, New York, "Drawing Discourse" at the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery at University of North Carolina in Asheville and "Anonymous Drawings no. 10", a Bluetenweiss project, at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin, Germany. Her work was featured on the cover of Yale University's Reflections magazine Spring 2010 issue. Kathleen's recent solo exhibitions include exhibitions at the Lake George Arts Project's Courthouse Gallery in Lake George, New York, in 2010 and at the Dayton Visual Arts Center in Dayton, Ohio in 2008.
Evangelos Courpas' exploits in wood have spanned his life through cabinet and furniture making, as a carpenter and a contractor, and in his art practice. Perhaps more than being a woodworker, he considers himself a builder in the broadest sense of the word. His art explores building in relation to space through collage and construction- using drawing, digital printmaking, video and sound installations, woodworking, and painting. His interests lie in how objects define the space around or in front of us lending them the ability to become the places that define us. His sensibilities as an artist have been unduly influenced by specific places and relationships, particularly those originating at The School of Art and Design at Alfred University and the Buffalo, NY area.
