JUROR // VIRGINIA SAMSEL

Virginia Samsel got significant attention from the art world for her 2002 installation project titled, Locker 50B. It was a 12 x 14 x 19 inch storage locker located on the third floor of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Fine Arts Building. Samsel had the locker fit with wood floors, removable foam core walls, lighting, and a plexiglass facade. Samsel and co-curator, Llewellyn Hensley, worked with students, faculty, visiting and local artists and curators to present monthly exhibitions on a miniature scale until their graduation in 2004. Receptions of up to 50+ were held in the hallway with visitors lining up to view the miniature gallery one at a time.

From 2005 to 2007, Samsel returned to Locker 50B serving as director/curator and aiding VCU in redeveloping the gallery as more accessible to high school students interested in pursuing art beyond general curriculum. The Locker 50B project has encouraged the development of several other “Locker Galleries” in high schools around the country. Locker 50B exhibitions continue at VCU.

Samsel received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions since grauation. Her current work utilizes diverse media and focuses on imagery from both European folk tales and Southern lore.
