ABSTRACT
Moved by Matter

“Although existence is grounded in experiences of the material world, the very things that make up the material world prompt the consideration of other immaterial, metaphysical, or spiritual dimensions of experience. This article addresses the play between the material and immaterial in select works by contemporary artists and considers ideas associated with Animism, Zen Buddhism, Islam, German Romanticism, New Materialism, and Actor Network Theory. This essay attempts to show the relevance of a rich tradition that extends across many cultures and time periods in recent art practice. Artists examined in this essay include Pierre Huyghe, Bill Viola, Anila Quayyum Agha, Anselm Kiefer, and Olafur Eliasson.”

The Bowdoin Art Society publishes the only academic journal in the United States that focuses exclusively on undergraduate art historical work, the Bowdoin Journal of Art.
We accept submissions of undergraduate work in the field of art history from students attending colleges and universities across the country. We consider submissions that reflect intensive research as well as genuine insight into a given topic.
These submissions are then edited and reviewed by a network of peers - a consortium of undergraduate reviewers who have indicated that their specialty or interest directly relates to the topic of the submission.
Once the submissions have been peer reviewed and sent back to the author, they are selected to be published in the Bowdoin Journal of Art database where they will be a resource for research and discourse.
Submissions should:
- Demonstrate an intimate knowledge of art historical contexts
- Offer unique perspectives on traditions within art history
Please email submissions to journalofart(at)bowdoin.edu. The deadline for submissions to this year's issue of the Bowdoin Journal of Art is December 31st, 2016.
