Announcing the Traditional Islamic Arts Program in Jordan, Summer 2012



AMIDEAST Education Abroad Programs in the Arab World is pleased to announce a distinctive opportunity for students to study Traditional Islamic Arts in Amman, Jordan during the summer.

As you may know, AMIDEAST is a leading American non-profit organization engaged in international education, training and development activities in the Middle East and North Africa. With AMIDEAST's 60-year presence in the region, education abroad students benefit from AMIDEAST's long-term experience, strong local connections, and deep understanding of local culture.

This 3-week summer course, offered in cooperation with the Institute for Traditional Islamic Art and Architecture in Amman, introduces students to the study of traditional Islamic art. This three credit course focuses on production of traditional Islamic art forms in calligraphy, illumination, wood, gypsum plaster carving, zillij tile mosaics and miniature painting. Students will spend approximately 25 hours per week in class and applied work.
  • In addition to academics, students also benefit from the opportunity to live with a Jordanian family (most speak English)
  • In-country orientation on arrival
  • In-country excursion to Madaba, Mt. Nebo, Baptism site and the Dead Sea
Arabic Language Extension: In addition to the 3-week Traditional Islamic Arts course, students are able to continue their experience in Jordan by participating in the 4-week Intensive Arabic Summer Session in Amman following the end of the Arts program.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants:
  • Are enrolled at an accredited college or university and have completed one year of post-secondary study
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale); however, applications will be considered holistically
  • Are physically and emotionally prepared to spend the summer abroad
  • Are willing to adapt to a new, potentially challenging environment
